There are less than 120,000 window cleaners serving in the U.S. Not even 1% has ever set up a pension system, union; and with a labor pool—that rare, your last refuge will be that of a specialist. Few are ready to pick up the squeegee and accept a menial wage in manual labor battling every season, condition, temperature and event: 0-100 degrees, wind, ice, snow, darkness, traffic and construction. Not taught or prepared for in schools, everyone must literally guess what they think the window cleaning industry actually is. The United States labor force has 10x more doctors & lawyers than the few 10,000 available uneducated, pre-illiterate and often illegal would be workers in Illinois who could look at cleaning glass as a profession. Many are also handicapped or over aged, and few have ever existed as reliable counterparts.
After 17 years of consistent window cleaning, we have discovered the limit of how many windows we can clean a month—without experiencing tendonitis, carpal tunnel or arthritis (those 8,500+ repetitive zig zag vibratory motions per route). We haven’t found any conveniently operating small businesses or companies who have the staff or time to accept new donated work we have had to cut due to our labor shortages. Selling a window cleaning business is often very difficult, we estimate a 10% chance of actually selling one. You may have heard as we receive our reports, many owners and one man shows have died during their tenure in this industry. Realistically, very few succeed. After Pure Image’s first 2,000,000 windows cleaned, we know now why many quit after one winter or move to a warmer state.
Post pandemic in Illinois, all our competitively constructed former routes & previous cost-effective route formation & management strategies evaporated as the result of industries / opportunities now ineligible—also others nearly shut down from post-pandemic conditions. In addition, our costs have skyrocketed past unforeseen 20 year-window cleaning history, some of our most essential products, have seen a 500% increase, such that our founding base must operate 35% higher to meet the demands of the 21st century costs.
As embarrassing as it may seem to raise prices, we repeatedly look at our 20-year timeline and see the 95% of other 100+ services we inquired about or have collaborated with over nearly 2 decades, and unlike those throwing in the towel, we have mitigated as best we can to avoid extinguishing services like those in search of a more stable industry. It truly is hard to convince someone that 4,000,000 windows cleaned isn’t even enough to retire anymore. We hope we can make it easier for the next generation of window cleaners in the United States.
As a result, we are changing our accounting & payment systems to substituting for what we could never afford—a viable business model.
